McDonnell has been awarded the Academy Award nod for the role she was on Dances with Wolves, as Stands With A Fist. In addition to this role McDonnell is also well-known as Laura Roslin (President of Battlestar Galactica), the spouse of the president on Independence Day as well as her main role in the film as Donnie Darko's mother.
