Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise when she was just a young girl. The aunt she had was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her days to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learnt by doing that art is a great tool for social activism. DuVernay was raised by her mother who was aware of her social circle and showed her how to use the arts as a means to express herself. DuVernay resided in Compton during the majority of her childhood, but she spent every summer in the company of her father's extended family living in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled Civil Rights marches that occurred over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, inspired her later to write a script for a film based on The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay began producing for the broadcast industry while she was in her university. She started as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to monitor and investigate the residence of a particular member of the Jury. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalism tasks and decided to move into the public relations industry. DuVernay began her career as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio following her graduation from college. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency.
